Prayer is the greatest practical pillar of Islam, and reverence (khushu’) within it is a religious obligation. Since Allah’s enemy, Iblis (Satan), has pledged to mislead and tempt the children of Adam, his greatest scheme is to divert people from prayer by various means, whispering to them during it to deprive them of the pleasure of this worship and to waste their reward and recompense.
Since reverence is the first thing to be lifted from the earth and we are in the end times, the saying of Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) applies to us: “The first thing you will lose from your religion is reverence, and the last thing you will lose from your religion is prayer. Many a praying person has no good in him, and soon you will enter the mosque and not see a single reverent person among them.”
This book discusses the importance of preparing for prayer and achieving tranquility within it. It presents 33 recommendations for achieving reverence during prayer that we can follow to improve our prayers.
